India has recently implemented its four consolidated Labour Codes, replacing 29 earlier labour laws with a simplified and unified regulatory framework. The reforms aim to modernise employment regulation, strengthen worker protection, and streamline compliance for employers.

The four Labour Codes are:

  • Code on Wages
  • Industrial Relations Code
  • Code on Social Security
  • Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code

Together, these codes introduce changes that are relevant for companies with employees or operations in India, as well as for companies planning market entry.

Key elements of the new framework

The Labour Codes introduce, among other things:

  • A statutory framework for minimum wages
  • Expanded social security coverage, including gig and platform workers
  • Mandatory issuance of appointment letters
  • Gratuity eligibility after one year for fixed-term employees
  • Provisions on equal remuneration
  • Simplified compliance through single registration and consolidated filings

These changes are intended to reduce regulatory complexity while strengthening protections for the workforce.

Relevance for Norwegian companies

For Norwegian companies operating in India, or assessing opportunities in the Indian market, these reforms have implications for:

  • Employment contracts and workforce planning
  • Payroll and benefits structures
  • Internal HR policies and compliance processes

Understanding the scope and practical application of the Labour Codes is important for managing legal risk and ensuring compliance under the new regulatory regime.
